About the event
Reclaiming Black Childhood: Using the Power of Play to Reclaim Joy
Black children are too often pushed out of childhood through adultification, systemic inequities, and generational trauma that restrict their access to joy, safety, and freedom. This training looks directly at those realities and explores how play therapy can serve as a healing practice and a radical act of restoration.
In this three-hour workshop, we’ll examine the historical, cultural, and societal forces that shape the lived experiences of Black children and how these dynamics show up in the playroom. You’ll learn practical, culturally responsive play therapy strategies that center joy, representation, empowerment, and belonging.
Play isn’t just an intervention; it’s a pathway back to identity, connection, and possibility. When clinicians intentionally reclaim the power of play, we help Black children heal, grow, and reconnect with the joy that should have always been theirs.
